Horanzy Rev. Joseph M. 1959 - Staff

Father Horanzy

Visiting Priest

Father Horanzy, pastor emeritus of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Wilkes-Barre, has been a faithful friend and unyielding pastoral presence to our parish for several years. He regularly celebrates Mass in Forest City, Pleasant Mount, and Rock Lake – we are so blessed to have him as part of our family and are so grateful for his pastoral care. Born in Nanticoke on March 6th 1932 to Michael and Stella (nee Szaulinskas) Horanzy and had two brothers, Michael (who died serving our country in Germany in World War II) and Eugene who died in 2012. Like Fr. Clarke, Fr. Horanzy is the youngest in his family – do you see any similarities?

Fr. Horanzy attended St. Stanislaus School in Nanticoke before graduating from Nanticoke High School. Having graduated high school, Father attended King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, before earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary’s College, Orchard Lake, Michigan. Father then completed his theological studies at SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, also in Orchard Lake. He later earned a Masters in Religious Studies from Marywood College. Father was ordained a priest on February 21, 1959 at The Cathedral of Saint Joseph, Buffalo, New York, by The Most Reverend Joseph A. Burke, the ninth bishop of Buffalo.

Fr. Horanzy began his priestly ministry at The Church of Saint Leo the Great (1959-1966). Subsequent assignments include: Sacred Heart Church, Peckville (1966-1975); SS. Peter and Paul Church, Plains (February 1975-December 1975). His first pastorate was at St. Francis Xavier Church Friendsville (1975-1977); SS. Peter and Paul Church, Avoca (1977-1982); St. Casimir Church, Dunmore (1982-1992). He final assignment as pastor was St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Wilkes-Bare.
